A K D H O M E - H O M E O F F I C E R E V E A L
When I purchased this house, the builder provided a structural add-on for a multi-purpose loft on the second floor. There was no way I was going to pass up on this since I knew I needed a dedicated home office space. When walking through the empty space, I immediately envisioned a large desk with ample storage and a couch for lounging. A dark and moody vibe seemed like a good idea because when a room has five windows with tons of natural light, that’s just what you do!
Since there was one wall with no windows, it was the perfect spot for floor-to-ceiling custom cabinetry and a built-in, extra deep desk. It was important to have a mix of drawers, cabinets and open shelves for flexible storage options, but my favorite part of the design is the printer cabinet. With two pull-out drawers inside, I can conveniently store two printers. Easy to access when I need them, and completely out of sight when I don’t!
Actually, I take it back. My favorite part of the design is the cabinet color. It’s called Greenblack by Sherwin Williams and believe me when I say it is GORGEOUS, especially when the light hits it. Not too stark black, and contrary to it’s name, it has more of blue rather than green undertone. The leather chair adds a warm tone to the overall design, while satin bronze hardware brings in a sense of elegance.
I wrapped the rest of the room in a woven wallpaper to get that really dark and moody effect. The brown/gray tone pairs beautifully with the cabinetry color, and the thick jute texture really elevates the overall design. Because there are so many windows, it was important to match the shades to the walls so we didn’t break up the dark atmosphere. So I decided on roman shades from The Shadestore in a beautiful linen fabric, and you guys know I love layering in drapery panels. These ones are non-functioning, but add in such a cozy factor.
The rug and couch were the only pieces I kept light to create a high contrast to the other dark elements in the room. I love reading (and taking the occasional afternoon nap) on the couch, and the little brass end table is the perfect spot to light a candle or set a cup of tea. Another unique element in the space is this stunning textile art by Lauren Williams, and I love how it’s the first thing you see upon entering the space.
Despite changing my mind more times than I care to admit, and waiting (for what seemed like an eternity) for backordered items due to the pandemic, it was all worth it. I’m so incredibly happy with the end result and I can honestly say it turned out better than I expected.
Most of the sources are to-the-trade only and/or custom pieces, but I linked the retail pieces below!
