How to Incorporate Storage Into Your Furniture

As a full-time interior designer for almost 4 years now, I’ve noticed that many homeowners have an issue with clutter. For my clients, one of the top priorities is finding a home for all of their personal belongings. I like to do this by creating bespoke furniture pieces or custom built-in cabinetry. But today, I want to talk about how you can keep clutter to a minimum by concealing items with readily available furniture!

Let’s start with the family room. Instead of a traditional open media console below the TV, opt for a credenza or buffet with cabinets. It allows for a more stylish option and provides a generous amount of storage. You can easily hide wires and keep all your media components organized.

Lift-top coffee tables are another way to keep certain items out of sight in the family room. Whether it’s board games, magazines or kid’s toys, throw them all in when it’s time to clean up so nothing accumulates on the surface of the table. Another plus? You have space to show off pretty tabletop accessories or a vase of fresh flowers!

A storage bench in the bedroom is a great option to tuck away blankets and pillows, and in the the entryway it’s ideal to house shoes, hats and other everyday items. It’s easy access when you need them, and out of sight when you don’t!

Another simple, but often overlooked element is to incorporate nightstands with drawers instead of an open shelf. Phone chargers, glasses, books, etc tend to accumulate on top of nightstands, so having drawers to corral everything is ideal. And if you are tight on bedroom space in general, consider purchasing a bed with drawers or hidden storage. They’re great to hold everything from blankets and sheets to clothes and accessories.
